Celebrating the Legacy of the Sri Lanka Air Force

In 2026, the Sri Lanka Air Force proudly marks its 75th anniversary, celebrating a remarkable journey of dedication, courage, and national service. Over the past seven and a half decades, the Air Force has grown from a modest beginning into a key pillar of Sri Lanka’s national defense and humanitarian response system.

This milestone is more than just a celebration of history. it is a tribute to the generations of airmen and women who have devoted their lives to protecting the country and supporting its people.

The roots of the Sri Lanka Air Force can be traced back to 2 March 1951, when it was first established as the Royal Ceylon Air Force. At the time, the newly independent nation was building its own defense institutions after gaining independence from British rule.

With assistance and training from the Royal Air Force of the United Kingdom, the young air force began developing its operational capabilities. Early pilots and technicians trained abroad and returned home to build the foundation of Sri Lanka’s aviation defense.

When the country became the Sri Lanka in 1972, the Royal Ceylon Air Force was renamed the Sri Lanka Air Force, reflecting the nation’s new identity.

Throughout its history, the Sri Lanka Air Force has continued to evolve. From operating basic training aircraft in its early days, the force gradually expanded its fleet to include helicopters, transport aircraft, and fighter jets.

During periods of national conflict, the SLAF played a crucial role in protecting the country’s airspace and supporting ground operations. The dedication and bravery of its pilots and ground crews ensured that the Air Force remained a reliable defense force even during the most challenging times.

Today, the SLAF operates a diverse range of aircraft and advanced aviation technologies, allowing it to carry out missions that include surveillance, transport, rescue operations, and national security duties.

While national defense remains the core mission, the Sri Lanka Air Force has also earned respect for its humanitarian contributions.

In times of natural disasters such as floods and emergencies, Air Force aircraft and personnel often provide vital assistance. Their missions include delivering relief supplies, conducting search-and-rescue operations, and performing emergency medical evacuations.

Through these efforts, the Air Force continues to serve not only as a military institution but also as a lifeline for communities in need.

To commemorate this historic milestone, the Sri Lanka Air Force organized a series of public celebrations and aviation events. One of the most exciting highlights was the aviation exhibition and air display held at SLAF Base Ratmalana.

Visitors had the opportunity to witness impressive aerial demonstrations, view aircraft up close, and learn more about aviation technology and the daily operations of the Air Force.

The celebration allowed thousands of aviation enthusiasts, students, and families to connect with Sri Lanka’s aviation heritage.

As the Sri Lanka Air Force moves beyond its 75th anniversary, it continues to focus on modernization, innovation, and training. Investments in technology, pilot training, and aircraft systems are shaping a future where the Air Force remains ready to meet both traditional and emerging challenges.

The next generation of Sri Lankan aviators will carry forward the proud legacy built over the last seventy-five years.

The story of the Sri Lanka Air Force is ultimately a story about people pilots, engineers, technicians, and support staff who dedicate their lives to serving their country.

For 75 years, they have guarded the skies, assisted communities, and represented the spirit of Sri Lankan aviation.

As the nation celebrates this milestone, the legacy of the Sri Lanka Air Force continues to inspire young aviation enthusiasts and future pilots who dream of one day flying in the service of their country.
